LIME & GINGER QUENCHER

Edit
This recipe has a spicy, tangy taste and I particularly enjoy it warm (with a sprig of Rosemary) immediately after I wake up most mornings.
Ginger
Ginger helps alleviate nausea , promotes good complexion, etc...and above all helps with gastrointestinal irritation.
Ginger acts as a stimulus for bile and saliva production which helps relief gastric cramps ( flare up of my tummy), especially with the passage of food to the GI tract ( where nutrients are absorbed and waste created due to the consumption of food).
Lime
Lime shares some similarities with Ginger, whereby its sourness helps stimulate saliva and bile production to help the breakdown and elimination food.
Tip
Adding salt to Lime acts as a perfect natural purge remedy against constipation. It's citric acid aides weight loss as it acts as a fat burner.
Lime is rich in Vitamin C and Flavonoids which acts as an immune booster, detoxifier and as an antioxidant, hence the inclusion in this recipe.
Tip
Try this recipe warm, without any Sugar or sweeteners, first thing after you wake up in the morning to kick start your digestive system.
After my early morning drink, I add some maple syrup, refrigerate the rest and enjoy it chilled in the sun. Bliss!
Tip
Buy unwaxed Limes ( which has a rougher exterior) and if your budget can stretch buy organic. For waxed Limes as shown above scrub it with a brush and water to get rid of the wax.
Ingredients
6 washed Limes
150g of grated fresh Ginger ( reduce quantity for a less spicy drink).
1 litre of Water
4 tablespoons of Maple syrup or 70g of Sugar (optional).
A pinch of salt.
Method
Zest the Limes into a bowl,
Rub the Limes in between your palm to soften them (this makes for an easy squeeze).
Cut the Limes in half and squeeze the juices into your bowl with its zest.
Grate the Ginger into the bowl, add the salt and stir. Leave the mixture to infuse for about 10 minutes in the fridge.
Add the water , Maple syrup and stir. Transfer into a glass bottle and refrigerate for at least an hour.
Using sugar
Add the sugar and 2 tablespoons of water to saucepan and warm it up. One the sugar has dissolved, remove it from the heat and leave to completely cool down.
Add the syrup to the drink, stir , transfer to a glass bottle and refrigerate till chilled.
Enjoy!
